With an almost documentary style and a powerful hip-hop soundtrack, life on the winding and worn down streets of Bogotá is captured through this intriguing story of three teenage brothers trapped in a society providing little hope for the future. For one of them, hairdressing becomes the rescue.

Focus is on the middle brother Tomas who refuses to become yet another victim of his rough social environment. His older brother Chaco comes back from “el Norte” – North America – with a trendy new haircut, making Tomas pick up his first set of scissors and razors. Through his natural skill and artistic flair he discovers both a calling as a barber – and a way out. The fraternal bond is strong, yet it’s tested as Tomas sees his younger brother Jairo and older brother Chaco disappearing into drugs and crime, the route he is trying to avoid.

»La playa d.c.« is a unique coming-of-age story, where Tomas balances responsibility with his first true romance. Director Juan Andrés Arango’s feature debut may very well be the strongest to come out of Colombia in a long time.
