When accused of collaborating with the enemy in the ongoing guerilla war in Colombia, farmer Emilio, along with his nine-year- old son Simon, is forced by rebels to leave their piece of land. After relocating with the help of a relative, Emilio and his son struggle with their new life. Their economic hardship forces Emilio to take work in the illegal poppy fields belonging to a local drug lord. Meanwhile, Simon meets and befriends Luisa, a girl his own age. Together they secretly start to care for a neighborhood puppy, all the while living in an atmosphere made dense by the omnipresent shadow of violence and death.

»Field of amapolas«, was filmed near director Juan Carlos Melo Guevara’s hometown Ipiales in the Nariño region of Colombia, supposedly the first feature film to ever be shot in the area. It depicts the struggle of innocent civilians for whom it is impossible to avoid the illegal activities of a rural region ravaged by a seemingly endless conflict.
