6-year-old Hushpuppy lives with her bipolar, tough-loving father in a place vaguely reminiscent of New Orleans but known to the residents only as Bathtub. When a great storm that somewhat resembles Hurricane Katrina hits Bathtub, strange things begin to happen. Also, due to a mysterious disease, Hushpuppy’s father’s health is fading. With an almost biblical melt down shaking everything around her, Hushpuppy bravely takes off alone, in search of her missing mother.
The sea level reaches new and alarming heights, wild animals awaken from the dead, and the whole world is coming to an end in this fairytale about a rough life seen through the eyes of an imaginative child. Debuting director Benh Zeitlin creates his very own universe in »Beasts of the Southern Wild«, both enchanting and somber, a place where fantasy and harsh reality melt together.
Awarded Best Film at Sundance and winning no less than four prizes at Cannes and with an outstanding performance by young actress Quvenzhané Wallis, it is time for the Stockholm International Film Festival audience to take Hushpuppy to their hearts.
