Yanji is a city populated by 800,000 people located in the Yanbian Prefecture—a region between North Korea, China, and Russia. Approximately half of the inhabitants are involved in some sort of illegal business. This is where we find taxi driver Gu-nam. His wife has traveled to Korea to earn money but he has not heard from her in six months. When he tries to make some extra cash from mah-jong gambling, he soon finds himself on a losing streak. That is when Myun enters the picture and makes Gu-nam a simple, but risky, offer. He is to go to South Korea, kill a man, and bring back his thumb. The operation will not only free Gu-Nam of all his debts but it will also give him a chance to search for his wife.

Director Na Hong-Jin had a spectacular debut with »The Chaser« and he now follows up with the same team of actors in this fascinating action drama. By combining storytelling on an epic scale with explosive action scenes (the film has over 5 000 cuts) Hong-Jin is quickly making a name for himself as the next big Asian action director.
