11-year-old Cyril does not accept his faith. When his father places him in the care of an orphanage, he believes it is a mistake and leaves to find his father. Eventually Cyril discovers that his father has moved away from their old apartment, and even sold Cyril’s beloved bike. He slowly realizes that his father really does not want him anymore. The Belgian brothers Dardenne have described their film as a modern fairy tale—something that is difficult to contradict. Cyril finds unlikely help in the fairy like hairdresser, Samantha. All the while being lured into the darker sides of society by a local hoodlum, or the Big Bad Wolf if you so wish.

Like in their previous films »Rosetta«, »The Son« and »The Child«, the directing duo continue to explore the relationships between children and adults. With »The Kid With a Bike« they take one step away from their established cinematic style. The film is shot during the summer, adding more color and warmth to the images, and unlike their other films, »The Kid With a Bike« has a musical score.
