This is what film noir would have looked like if they had color film in the 1940’s. Director Sion Sono effectively uses color to enhance and give clues in this dark crime film about sex and death.

The story centers around Izumi, a young housewife controlled by her perfectionist husband, a respected author of intellectual sex novels. When the bored Izumi takes a day job, she is spotted by a model agent, who soon has her naked in front of the camera. This experience leads to a sexual awakening; at the same time it leads her down a dark path into the city’s red light district. Accompanying and pushing her further along the way is femme fatale Mitsuko, who is a university lecturer by day and prostitute by night. We also get to follow detective Yoshida’s attempt to solve a grotesque murder involving two corpses made of mannequin and human parts sewed together.

»Guilty of Romance« is the third film in Sion Sono’s Hate-trilogy, following »Love Exposure« and »Cold Fish«.
