Ah Tao has been working for the Leung family for 60 years. Suddenly she suffers a stroke and has to move in to a nursing home. Roger, the last remaining Leung, decides to care for Ah Tao, as she has been caring for his family for decades. »A Simple Life« is in some aspects a homage to traditional Chinese values. The concept of caring for your elders is the core of Ann Hui’s feel good. The friendship between Roger and Ah Tao evolves and exceeds the limitations of age and class.

Chinese film enthusiasts will notice several Chinese film industry names in cameos and the story itself is based on the life of Hong Kong producer Roger Lee. Ann Hui has been directing films and TV productions since 1979 and is one of the most prominent names of the Chinese film industry. »A Simple Life« is her 26th feature film as a director and is a pleasant low-key comedy depicting friendship and the Chinese film industry.
