»50/50« is a dark comedy about 27 year-old Adam whose life takes an unexpected turn when he gets diagnosed with cancer. His mother is busy taking care of her husband, Richard, who has Alzheimer’s disease. When Adam breaks the news of his condition to his inner circle of friends they all react differently, but his best friend Kyle’s jokes and laughs help Adam to cope. He also finds new friends in other more experienced patients, who gladly give him good advice about things such as chemotherapy and hair-loss.

Director Levine has found his main inspiration for this drama from screenwriter Will Reiser's own story. Levine shows enormous courage in addressing such a sensitive topic as cancer from a humorous point of view. He manages to do it in a liberating way, showing that it does not have to be taboo.
