While British gore hounds like Neil Marshall and Christopher Smith have gone medieval lately, Paul Andrew Williams chooses a different path and delivers a frightening take on the disturbing home invasion subgenre. After this nasty piece of terror you will never use the expression ’There’s no place like home’ again. Intimate and gut wrenching, Cherry Tree Lane opens up with a symbolic shot of water boiling, followed by an introduction of the prosperous couple, Mike and Christine, having dinner in front of the TV, engaged in low-level marital hostility and standard small talk. A ring on their doorbell changes everything; apparently their son Sebastian is in trouble with some urban, teenage hooligans. While waiting for him to get home, the kids watch Night of the Living Dead, smoke weed and practice rape – just like any other night. When Sebastian eventually gets home, all hope is vain.
