Spotlight: Wild East
In our special Spotlight section, the focus is on the mighty nation of Russia. With a continued ambition of bringing quality film to the Swedish audience, the Stockholm International Film Festival is proud to present a selection of the best in current Russian cinema.
Russia is a country that, after more than a decade of decline, is once again making topnotch quality films, its production quota growing with every year. And even though the recent economical crisis has put a temporary freeze on many on-going productions, the Stockholm Film Festival can proudly present you with the hottest and latest in Eastern European independent moviemaking: eight exciting new Russian films, and one provocative German documentary, depicting the life of homosexuals in Moscow.
The big country in the East has a history and reputation of being a seminal area when it comes to making films. And with the last four years’ boosted investments in film production, big blockbuster styled movies as well as smaller art house pieces, a new generation of filmmakers has started to receive international recognition. Just like the Stockholm Film Festival put the spotlight on the Asian film scene way ahead of everyone else, we’re now doing the same with Russia in our mission of spreading quality productions to the masses.
– The enormous span and contrasts within the Russian film market has increased, and it’s going to be very thrilling to present all these new talented directors, says festival director Git Scheynius.
