Having witnessed his mother suffering nine miscarriages, a common tragedy among people living in environmentally unhealthy areas, director Josh Tickell decides to take action. To spread the word on climate-friendly biodiesel, he builds a van that runs entirely on second hand cooking oil. The idealist eco-activist takes his vehicle on a worldwide road trip, and soon he persuades famous stars like rock’n’roller Neil Young and actor Woody Harrelson to join him in his struggle to make the world a greener place. For Tickell, this is a mission that never ends.

This documentary is refreshingly rid of arty pretensions and focuses entirely on getting the urgent environmental message across. With Tickell’s intimate tie between the personal and the political, and with some help from a bombastic pop soundtrack, Fuel strikes a powerful chord. This special blend helped him win the Audience Award for best documentary at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008.
