On an old run down fishing boat we find an old man living with a 16-year old girl, far away from the mainland and the troubles of modern day life. The man found her when she was six years old and then raised her for ten years on this boat, floating on the ocean, with the desire to marry her. One day, as the old man arrives with a couple of amateur fishermen, the beautiful girl meets a young man that turns her attention towards life on the main land, free from the prisonlike environment that the boat has become. But the love between the girl and the old man may be stronger than the allurement of a life in freedom.Critically acclaimed director Kim Ki-duk is back with a tale of love without boundaries and a magical setting of a life on the border between the old world of Korean tradition and modern day Korea. Ki-duks artistic use of contrasting colours mixed with music influenced by traditional Korean fiddlemusic, creates an atmosphere recognised from his previous productions. The sparse dialogue and the mimicry of the main characters tells a story of two people not in terms with modern day living, creating their own quiet and spiritually free life on the ocean. But what may be freedom can also be a prison.NATALIE MAJERSKI
